How to make a QR code for your WhatsApp group
Copy your group’s invite link in WhatsApp and paste it above. Pick a design, then download it as PNG for screens or SVG for print. When someone scans the code, WhatsApp opens the group and offers to join it: nobody has to add them by hand.
Where to find the invite link
- In the app: open the group, tap its name, then Invite via link or QR code, and copy the link.
- What it looks like: chat.whatsapp.com/ followed by a code of letters and numbers.
- Who can share it: admins always can. In groups with fewer than 33 members, other members can too, unless an admin turns off Add other members in the group permissions.
When the link is reset, printed codes stop working
An admin can reset the invite link at any time, for example after it was shared too widely. WhatsApp then makes a new link, and the old one can’t be restored: anyone who scans a code holding the old link is told it was reset and can’t join. Posters, flyers and signs would all have to be reprinted.
An editable link avoids that. The code opens a short olinqs link, which opens your group. When the invite link changes, paste the new one in your account and every printed code keeps working. Scans are counted too, by day, country and device, so you can see which poster brings people in.
Keep the group under control
Anyone with the link can join the group and pass the link on. For a code in a public place, turn on Approve new members in the group permissions: people who scan it ask to join, and an admin lets them in.
Questions
Can I use the QR code WhatsApp makes for the group?
You can, but it holds the invite link itself, so it stops working when the link is reset, and you can’t change its colours, add a caption or count its scans. Here you can do all of that.
Does the code expire?
No. Codes made here never expire: the code works for as long as the invite link inside it does, which is until an admin resets it. An editable code can then be pointed to the new link.
How many people can join?
A WhatsApp group holds up to 1,024 members.
Can I make a code that opens a chat with me instead?
Yes: the WhatsApp QR code page takes your number and a ready-to-send message.
